Anyway! V! We’re already at the letter V – that’s crazy! We’re also already past Thanksgiving an on to more tinseled holidays. ::laugh:: But that has nothing to do with my V – mostly because I can’t think of a Christmas word that starts with V… but now I feel the need to…

Stay on your track, you dang train of thought!

My V today is for Victor-Victoria! Now, I admit, I don’t actually know anything about this musical other than the name (that I half share) and the fact that it has something to do with the feminine and the masculine – and that’s the tie I have today to my ABC blog.

The feminine and the masculine. In my world, being a nice mix of both makes for a well-rounded existence. There are the traditional roles and responsibilities associated with each gender, and that’s perfectly fine. If you want to be the stay-at-home mom or the happy housewife, that’s great! There are definitely people who thrive in those roles, and do great, great things in their lives and the lives of others.

I am not that person.

I am the person who wants to try her hand in both “traditional” worlds. Sure, I cook and clean and do laundry and lots of other Happy Housewife chores. But I also love yardwork and playing with tools, which are traditionally reserved for the dudes. I think there are very few things that one gender can do that the other can’t – for example, writing your name in the snow (boys) or having babies (girls). So I see no reason why I can’t play in both playgrounds.

Growing up, I was probably a little more Victor than Victoria – I was one heck of a tomboy.

Dresses = No.

Skirts = No.

High heels = Hell No!

Beating all the PRs in my weightlifting class = Hell yeah.

Knocking people flat on their face in soccer = Obviously.

Learning Kickboxing so I could be even more intimidating = Why not?

These days I am a lot more Victoria, but then there are still those days where I am covered in mud out in the yard with all kinds of tools scattered around me as I swear and grumble trying to get something accomplished. I like to lift weights and watch scary movies. I like to beat up on people and swear like a pirate. None of it is exclusively for boys, so I enjoy the hell out of it. And I think everyone else should to, if they want to.

I get that weight lifting and martial arts aren’t for everyone, just like ballet and yoga aren’t for everyone. I’m only saying have an open mind. Try new things! When you find something you love, just do it. If people tell you that you can’t, then you prove them wrong. And above all else, don’t be that person that says someone can’t.
